Pucón is one of those towns that feels built for adventure and comfort all at once. Nestled between the shores of Lake Villarrica and the towering snow-capped Villarrica Volcano, it’s a hub for outdoor lovers, but also has just enough charm, restaurants, and slow pace to make you want to stay a while. Here’s what to expect once you arrive.
First Impressions
Pucón is walkable, scenic, and lively without ever feeling overwhelming. On a clear day, you can stroll down the main strip and see the volcano looming in the distance — it’s surreal and beautiful. The town is packed with restaurants, markets, hostels, adventure companies, and cozy cabins. While it definitely has a touristy edge, the natural surroundings and friendly locals keep it grounded.
It’s also a popular basecamp for outdoor adventures, especially if you have a car. We didn’t, and were more focused on finding affordable local attractions. Guided outdoor experiences — like hiking Villarrica Volcano, visiting the thermal baths, rafting, or horseback riding — are easy to find, but they can add up quickly if you’re on a backpacker’s budget. That said, if there are any bucket list items, I’d say go for it — the experiences can be once-in-a-lifetime.
For those traveling on a budget, don’t worry — there are still ways to enjoy this adventure town. We made the most of the natural ambiance and took local transportation to nearby parks and trails. It’s totally possible to soak up the magic of Pucón without breaking the bank.
Food Highlights
1. Restaurant Mi Casa
A hidden gem and local favorite, this spot feels like you’re stepping into someone’s home—because you kind of are. The food is traditional Chilean comfort cuisine, rich in flavor and cooked with care. From hearty soups to grilled chicken with mashed potatoes, you really can’t go wrong. The menu changes daily and typically offers 3–4 options, each served as a complete meal with sides like a starch and a veggie. It’s warm, welcoming, and incredibly satisfying after a day of exploring. The food is very affordable, the service was great, and we ended up eating here twice during our stay—it was just that good.
2. Restaurant Coronado
Another cozy, local place to try classic Chilean dishes. I had a delicious Pastel de Choclo here (corn pie with ground meat, hard-boiled eggs, and olives baked under a sweet corn crust). The portions were generous, and the prices were fair.
3. Street Food and Sandwiches
Along the main street, you’ll find lots of quick bites. Look out for Chilean staples like the Completo (a hot dog loaded with avocado, mayo, and tomato), Lomito (sliced pork sandwich), or Churrasco (grilled beef sandwich). Great for a cheap, filling lunch on the go.
Lake Villarrica
Pucón sits right on the edge of Lake Villarrica, and it’s one of the town’s biggest draws. Whether you’re in the mood for a peaceful stroll, a paddle in a kayak, or just a sunset picnic, the lakeside is the perfect spot. There are beaches, benches, walking paths, and often street performers or markets set up in the evenings.
Other Things to Do in Town
