My boyfriend had always wanted to do a big solo trip through Asia. When he finally went — Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines — I stayed behind in Mexico and tried to figure out what I was doing with my life. A few months later he was in Sri Lanka and asked if I wanted to come. I found a flight through Canada and England because that’s apparently how you get to Asia from Mexico, and I went.
We traveled together for six or seven weeks. Sri Lanka’s southern coast, the surf towns and overnight buses of the Philippines, the northern tip of Borneo because someone wrote a blog post about a wave there, and Singapore to end it. Then he went to Bali and I flew home to Mexico.
I’m not a solo travel evangelist and I’m not going to pretend this was some brave independent journey — I was following someone I loved across the world and figuring it out as we went. But it was the most culturally immersive travel I’ve ever done and it changed how I see a lot of things. These articles are my attempt to document it honestly.
